DILI, 22 june 2021 (TATOLI) – United Nation Children Fund (UNICEF) advocates for child protection law must be appropriate with the situation of Timor-Leste and even as a piece of paper of law. It is most important for Timor-Leste to ensure there are proper institutions, structure and in place to implement the law.

The representative of UNICEF, Bilal Aurang Zeb Durrani considers child labor is global issue and even happened in Timor-Leste. This issue must be treated with appropriate law relating to the real condition of Timor-Leste.

During the pandemic situation most of country around the world have increasing number of child labor. Timor-Leste is one of the countries that face the same problems.

Child Labor issue is caused by school temporary close, family face financial problem to respond for daily basic needs and life uncertainty. The child labor also happens due on the parents are jobless and not have permanent income. The United Nation Children Fund (UNICEF), Bilal Aurang Zeb Durrani told to Tatoli Agency, at UN house Caicoli, this tuesday.

The consequences of the child labor are caused of starvation, metal harm, money orientation, exploitation and child negligence.

The UNICEF is still finding the root of problem and recommending to the Government to solve out the problem of child labor.

UNICEF is working with Secretary of State for Professional Training and Employer (SEFOPE) and Minister of Finance (MF), to conduction a collective research to ensure what caused affected for increasing of child labor number in Timor-Leste.

“This collective research to helps government of Timor-Leste for the root problem finding to solve out this child labor issue,” said the representative of UNICEF, Bilal.

He said child labor and other form of exploitation can be preventable with any approached and it is to strengthen children protection system and it is can contribute to solve out the poverty and inequality.

It is improving the education accessibility and providing public convection programs to respect child rights.

He added all children should be investing in the education program and children will bring the return in future. Education program management is most important to support a child to achieve success and a bright future.

Timor-Leste is required for child protection law and it is helping children access all services that protect the children. If any child is victim by exploitation and abuse and there is no law available to address.

Mr. Bilal said a child protection draft law has been introduced to the Timor-Leste National Parliament and it is needed for public consultation, hopefully this drag law will be approved soon.

The contribution to solve child labor issue can be providing through human awareness and it is helping children not involve for child labor activity but provided children to access for proper education, health, nutrition foods and others.
