DILI, 07 june 2021 (TATOLI) – The President of Timor-Leste’s National Sports Federation (CDTL), Afranio Xavier Amaral informed that four Timorese athletes from three different sports were ready to compete in the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games.
“We are nearly to complete our preparation because we have been training and preparing for the event since january. We have been putting a lot of effort into training, despite experiencing this difficult situation,” Amaral said in Dili on monday.
Amaral affirmed that these three different sports included athletics, Taekwondo, and swimming: “Our athlete who is going to compete in athletics had been training in Gleno-Ermera, our swimming athletes have been training in Baucau municipality, and our Taekwondo athletes has been training in Australia.
These four athletes would fly to Tokyo-Japan on june 12 to be well prepared for the 2021 Olympic Games competition, which would be held in july.
Amaral said the Secretary of the State for Youth and Sport (SEJD) supports the training and preparation of Timor-Leste’s athletes for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games with US$30.000.
He said apart from Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games, Timor-Leste is also preparing its athletes for the Sea Games event, which would take place in Vietnam.
Amaral said according to the CDTL plan; Timor-Leste’s athletes would compete in 16 different sports in the next Sea Games.
“Once this difficult situation is over, then our Timorese athletes will begin to train again. If this situation is going to remain like this, then there would be no opportunities for our athletes to train,” said Xavier.
