DILI, 21 october 2020 (TATOLI)— Nominations for this year’s “Sérgio Vieira de Mello Awards are now open.
Timor-Leste Republic President has opened the opportunity to the citizens with the ogranisations to introduce their candidates for the 13th awards editions “ “Sérgio Vieira de Mello”, within 19 of October to 18 of November 2020.
According to the press release, the awards recognise the outstanding contribution made by entire citizens and organization that have dedicated themselves for the promotion, protection and discloses of the human right in Timor-Leste.
The awards is attributed annually in December 10, at the International Declaration of Human Right day.
“Sérgio Vieira de Mello” awards is assigned by the President as an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the contribution of the Timorese and International citizens, government organization, and non-government organization for the promotion, protection and publication of Human Right in Timor-Leste.
The citizens that promote and expose regarding the human right, will nominate their candidate to win the award with the price of US$ 10.000 for the winner for every category.
The awards is categorized into Civil Right and the politic for the individual or organization that become a Defensor to the human right and the right of the social, economy and cultural for the individual and organization that dedicate themselves for the promotion of human right activities in the social right area, economy and culture, namely fight the poverty, education, health, environment protection and social solidarity.
following are the criteria for the candidates:
- Individual cannot candidate themselves, every proponent can only introduce one candidate.
- Individual or organization that have become the winner for this award in the previous five years will not allow to be candidate themselves.
- The presentation of candidates should be written in official language Tetum/Portuguese.
The “Sergio Vieira de Mello”, award winnings based on the Decree law draft N. 15/2009, 18 of march, assigned by the President of Republic, aimed at highlighting the activities of Timorese and other Citizens, government organization and non-governmental organizations in a form of promotion, defense and expose of the human right in Timor-Leste.
Following the list of the winner in 2019, The Head of State had awarded the awards to the winner from the category of Social, Economy and Culture right, addressed to José Amaral Guterres, Marcelina dos Santos Cruz as well as the organization for the flora and fauna conservation (KFF).
While the winner for the Civil right and politic are José Luís de Oliveira and Virgílio da Silva Guterres “Lamukan”.
